My Spartan…more treatment

Things are moving along.  I imagine my spartan would say at about glacial speed.  But, healing takes time and he is being a very good impatient patient.  Kelly is going to rehab 3x a week for an hour each time.  He has just completed his second week and the improvement is evident.  He’s working hard not only at the facility but dutifully does his exercises at home 3x a day.

We made a visit to Deb, our rolfer, last week where she worked on Kelly’s calf muscles, right quads and hip.  Between the crutches, knee scooter and hopping on one foot periodically, things are a bit out of whack.  Working on those calf muscles was very painful but so so beneficial.  Increasing that blood flow will do wonders to help with the healing process.  We literally could tell an immediate difference.  No pain no gain…right?

Now, for today’s news.  The oncologist appointment did not go as we had hoped. We were sent on to the radiologist  who confirmed what we had not hoped for.  Kelly will soon begin 6 weeks of daily radiation (monday -friday).  It wasn’t the worst news we could have gotten, but none the less, we were disappointed.  Because of potential swelling and tenderness this will more than likely delay the prosthetic which is most disappointing of all.

Hopefully we’ll head up to Arkansas the end of this coming week to proceed with the first fitting before the radiation begins.  We’ll know more about that this coming week.

Farm work is going well.    We get up each morning and Kelly drives me around feeding the animals.  We built a roof shelter for the calves a few days ago and he even cut down a tree with his chainsaw.  Even while limited with what he can do, he manages a lot.  We are both just glad the mud is drying up!

Sweet friends came out last weekend and worked the calves and cows for us.  My spartan had fretted over that situation for weeks so getting that huge rock out of the way was priceless!  Just another reminder (that list is getting long) of how God has taken such good care of us through this process.  We had waited weeks for the mud to dry out and finally they just decided to get it done regardless.  It was a mess but so appreciated.  I was reminded of Galatians 6:10…”So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially those who are of the household of faith.”  Family taking care of family…His way…His plan…

Just a quick “mental check”…As frustrated and “down” as my spartan sometimes gets, it only takes a visit to rehab, the surgeon, oncologist or radiologists office to put things back in perspective.  We are fighting a temporary battle that will be won.  Whether it is spiritual or fleshly, the battle will be won.  He will be victorious.  What a wonderful promise that is…it is the one my spartan holds on to.

Today we will be celebrating Christmas with Kellen and his family. Christmas in January…sounds good to us…it has even snowed!

Listen to His Voice,

Lee Ann

      God is great!

  3. Radiation will not hurt or last long – takes longer to take off and put on clothing than
    the treatment lasts. Stay warm.
